In Things to Come, excerpts from Rockwell’s gallery scrapbooks are presented as facsimiles, lending texture and factual grounding to this history often shared through lore. These documents are accompanied by a group of works on paper by artists underrecognized for their contributions to abstraction in the US. Works by Stanley William Hayter, Balcomb Greene, and Irene Rice Pereira, among others on loan from the Marty O’Brien Collection of American Art, constitute an anchor of the exhibition. Emphasizing motifs of speed and acceleration in conversation with experimental, more relational possibilities of movement, the prints are presented alongside two films from Elizabeth Rockwell’s own collection: Maya Deren and Talley Beatty's A Study in Choreography for the Camera' (1945) and a film made a decade later, The Wonder Ring co-directed by Joseph Cornell and Stan Brakhage, of New York's 3rd Ave L subway before its demolition. The version on view is Cornell’s iteration.
